Early Signs and Symptoms of Liver Disease

The liver, about the size of a football, plays a vital role in digestion and detoxification. Because of its importance, recognizing the early signs of liver disease is essential to avoid serious health complications.

Liver disease can be caused by viruses, alcohol, obesity, or genetic conditions. Left untreated, it can lead to cirrhosis (scarring) and ultimately, liver failure. Here’s how to spot the warning signs early and when to seek care.

What Are the Early Symptoms of Liver Disease?

Common early symptoms include:

  • Jaundice – Yellowing of the skin, eyes, fingernails, or tongue caused by a buildup of bilirubin.
  • Dark urine – May appear brown or amber even if you’re hydrated, due to elevated bilirubin levels.
  • Pale stool color – Light yellow, gray, or clay-colored stool from decreased bile production.
  • Loss of appetite – Occurs when bile production slows, affecting fat digestion.
  • Nausea or vomiting – Caused by a buildup of toxins the liver can no longer filter effectively.
  • Itchy skin – Dry, flaky skin or increased bruising due to reduced clotting factors and poor circulation.
  • Abdominal pain or swelling – May be a sign of ascites (fluid buildup) from liver damage.

What Causes Liver Disease?

Liver disease may develop due to:

  • Viral infections (like hepatitis)
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Obesity or fatty liver disease
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Long-term medication use
  • Genetic disorders

Aging and stress can also weaken liver function over time.

When to See a Doctor

You should schedule an appointment if you:

  • Experience persistent fatigue or nausea
  • Notice yellowing of your eyes or skin
  • See unusual stool or urine color
  • Have swelling in the abdomen or lower legs

Early treatment can prevent complications like cirrhosis or liver failure.
