5 Healthy Habits to Help Protect Yourself This Flu Season

As the weather cools and the holidays approach, so does flu season—and with it, the increased risk of colds, viruses, and respiratory infections. Fortunately, there are simple and effective ways to reduce your chances of getting sick.

Here are 5 healthy habits you can start now to help prevent the flu and protect your household this season.

1. Wash Your Hands Often (And Thoroughly)

Handwashing remains one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of germs. Scrub your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially:

  • Before eating
  • After using the restroom
  • After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
  • After being in public places

Tip: If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

2. Avoid Touching Your Face

Your hands pick up bacteria and viruses throughout the day—and touching your eyes, nose, or mouth gives those germs a direct path into your body.

To break the habit:

  • Keep tissues handy
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue
  • Wear a mask in crowded public spaces

3. Keep Your Distance from Sick Individuals

If someone you know is sick, kindly give them space—at least 6 feet, if possible. Likewise, stay home if you're feeling unwell to prevent spreading illness to others.

Social distancing doesn’t just work for COVID—it’s effective for flu and cold viruses, too.

4. Strengthen Your Immune System Year-Round

A strong immune system helps fight off viruses more efficiently. Support yours with healthy habits like:

  • Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Getting 7–9 hours of sleep per night
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Exercising regularly
  • Managing stress through mindfulness or relaxing activities

Remember: Mental health affects physical health too!

5. Get Your Annual Flu Shot

The flu vaccine is the most powerful tool you have to prevent influenza. It’s updated annually to match the most common strains expected that season.

Even if you’ve never had the flu before, vaccination helps protect:

  • You
  • Your children
  • Seniors and people with compromised immune systems

The CDC recommends a flu shot for everyone over 6 months of age.
