Chickenpox is a contagious viral illness that causes an itchy rash and flu-like symptoms. It’s most common in children but can be serious in adults and those with weakened immunity.

  • Itchy, blister-like rash (usually starts on chest, back, and face)
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Antihistamines: To relieve itching (e.g., diphenhydramine)
  • Acetaminophen: Reduces fever and discomfort
  • Antiviral medications: (e.g., acyclovir) for high-risk patients
  • Cool baths & calamine lotion: Soothe irritated skin
    • Caused by the varicella-zoster virus
    • Spreads via airborne droplets or contact with fluid from blisters
    • Highly contagious 1–2 days before rash appears until all blisters scab
