Deep Vein Thrombosis

Medical diagram of Deep Vein Thrombosis

A blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg, which can lead to serious complications like a pulmonary embolism.

  • Leg swelling (usually one side)
  • Pain or cramping in the calf or thigh
  • Warmth or redness over the vein
  • Visible surface veins
    • Anticoagulants (Blood Thinners): Prevent existing clots from growing and new ones from forming.
    • Compression Stockings: Improve blood flow and reduce swelling.
    • Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filter: Catches clots before they reach the lungs in high-risk patients.
    • Prolonged immobility (travel, surgery)
    • Injury to a vein
    • Cancer or clotting disorders
    • Birth control pills or hormone therapy
