Pregnancy Testing at the Doctor’s Office: What You Need to Know

If you think you might be pregnant, you want answers you can trust. While over-the-counter pregnancy tests offer a convenient first step, seeing a doctor can provide more accurate results and peace of mind—especially if you’re unsure how or when to test.

At BASS Medical Group, our OB-GYNs and primary care providers (PCPs) help patients navigate pregnancy testing and reproductive health with care and expertise.

What Kind of Pregnancy Tests Do Doctors Use?

At the doctor’s office, there are typically two types of pregnancy tests you might receive:

Urine Test

Similar to home pregnancy tests, urine tests at the doctor’s office detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. These tests are up to 99% accurate and provide results within minutes.

Blood Test

Pregnancy blood tests are more sensitive and can detect lower levels of hCG earlier in pregnancy than urine tests. Your provider may refer you for this test if:

  • You’re testing early (before a missed period)
  • You have irregular menstrual cycles
  • There’s a history of miscarriage or infertility
  • Your symptoms need closer monitoring

How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests detect the hormone hCG, which the body starts producing after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus.

  • Urine tests typically detect hCG about 10 days after conception
  • Blood tests may detect hCG as early as 6–8 days post-conception
  • hCG levels double approximately every 2 to 3 days

Which Pregnancy Test Should I Ask For?

For most patients, a urine test is sufficient and provides fast, accurate results. If you’re testing early or need more detailed information (like tracking hCG levels), your provider may recommend a quantitative blood test.

Your doctor will guide you on which test is most appropriate for your situation.
